UV DTF vs DTF Transfers: Which One Do You Need?
For fabric, use DTF and press it with heat. For hard, smooth surfaces, use UV DTF and peel and stick it by hand.
By DTF Transfers Miami · Last updated: October 2026
Our UV film cracks on fabric, so don't use it on shirts. We print both in Miami, at our Kendall and Doral locations, so the specs below are ours, not an industry standard.
What is the difference between UV DTF and DTF transfers?
The main difference is the surface each film is made for, and how you apply it.
| Feature | DTF transfers | UV DTF transfers |
|---|---|---|
| Goes on | Fabric: cotton, polyester, blends, tri-blends, denim | Smooth, hard, non-porous surfaces: glass, stainless steel, ceramic, acrylic, metal, sealed wood |
| How it goes on | Heat press | Peel and stick by hand: no heat, no press, no machine |
| Finish | Full color on a white underbase. Glitter and neon films for effects, and ORGB 9-color film for a wider color range. | Full color, 3D raised texture, clear varnish coat |
| Flex | Stays flexible on the garment | The cured film does not stretch: it cracks on fabric or anything that flexes |
| Care | Wait 24 hours before the first wash. Made to last 50–100+ washes with proper care. | Waterproof varnish coat. Wash drinkware by hand, and never put it in the dishwasher or the microwave. |
| Sheet width and timing | We offer 24-inch-wide gang sheets, hot peel, and Same-Day DTF Transfers. Cold peel, glitter, neon, and ORGB come in 22-inch widths. Orders are ready in 24 hours, Monday–Friday. For Same-Day DTF Transfers, we print them the same day if you order print-ready artwork before 2 PM ET, Monday–Friday. | Sheets are 22 inches wide and 12 to 120 inches long. We print orders the same day if you submit print-ready artwork before 2 PM ET, Monday–Friday. |

What are UV DTF transfers?
A UV DTF transfer is a full-color decal. We print it with inks that cure under UV light, then seal it with a clear varnish coat. We do the printing and curing on film in our shop. You apply it by hand to a clean surface. No heat is needed.

You don't need a printer or any equipment. Upload your design, we print it in Miami, and you get a sheet of ready-to-apply decals. There's no weeding either: cut around each design with scissors, peel the backing, stick it down, rub it firmly and peel off the top film.
Send a transparent PNG at 300 DPI or vector art. Our file setup guide has the details. We print your artwork exactly as you upload it. Please double check the size, resolution, and transparency before you place your order.
What are regular DTF transfers?
Regular DTF is a film you heat press onto fabric. It prints in full color over a white underbase. You can order it as a gang sheet, where you fit as many designs as you want on one sheet and pay by the area, or as Same-Day DTF Transfers. It comes in hot peel and cold peel, and in specialty films: glitter, neon and ORGB 9-color.

Which one should you order? Start with what you're decorating
If it's fabric, order DTF. If it's smooth, hard and non-porous, order UV DTF. Our UV DTF won't bond to raw wood, silicone or textured finishes. Not sure about your surface? Ask us before you order.

| You're decorating | Order | Why | Where to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts | DTF transfers | Fabric flexes, and our UV film cracks on anything that flexes | Gang sheets, or Same-Day DTF Transfers for today (order before 2 PM ET, Monday–Friday) |
| Hats and fabric koozies | DTF transfers | Fabric needs heat-applied DTF with a white underbase | A gang sheet, same as shirts |
| Ceramic mugs | UV DTF | Smooth, hard, non-porous ceramic | A UV DTF sheet for mugs |
| Glass cans and cups | UV DTF | Smooth, hard, non-porous surface | A UV DTF sheet for cups |
| Tumblers | UV DTF | Smooth, hard surface | A UV DTF sheet for tumblers |
| Metal signs, acrylic, glass, sealed wood | UV DTF | Smooth, hard and non-porous | A UV DTF sheet |
| Raw wood, silicone, textured finishes | Not a fit for UV DTF | Our UV DTF will not bond to them | Ask us about your surface |
| A tumbler plus a matching shirt | Both, in one order | Each film goes on the surface it was made for | UV DTF Transfers + Same-Day DTF Transfers |
Shirts, hoodies, hats and fabric koozies: DTF
Use DTF. A gang sheet for shirts works for one design or many. Need them today? Order Same-Day DTF Transfers before 2 PM ET, Monday–Friday, with print-ready artwork. First gang sheet? Lay out your designs step by step.
Our DTF works on cotton, polyester, blends, tri-blends, and denim, in light and dark colors. Skip sublimated jerseys. Not sure about a garment? Ask us.
Mugs, cups and tumblers: UV DTF
All three work with UV DTF. Our surface list includes ceramic, glass, stainless steel, and acrylic. One UV DTF sheet can mix cup wraps, logos, and small decals, and you pay by the area, not per design.
Can you use UV DTF on shirts or other fabric?
No. UV DTF is made for hard, smooth surfaces like glass, metal, ceramic and acrylic. On fabric it doesn't hold up:
- It doesn't stretch. Once the UV ink cures, the decal is rigid, so it cracks when the fabric bends or stretches.
- It sits on top of the fibers. You apply it by hand with a pressure-sensitive adhesive and no heat, so it can't grip into the fabric the way a heat-pressed transfer does.
- It feels like a sticker. The finish is raised and glossy, not soft like a print that's part of the shirt.
For shirts, hoodies, hats, totes and fabric koozies, use regular DTF transfers. They're heat pressed with a hot-melt adhesive and flexible inks that move with the fabric and hold up to washing. For garments, see our page on DTF transfers for t-shirts.

What surfaces can UV DTF go on?
UV DTF sticks to smooth, hard, non-porous surfaces:
- Glass: glass cans, jars and tumblers
- Metal and stainless steel: tumblers, water bottles, metal signs and tool boxes
- Ceramic: mugs
- Acrylic: blanks, plaques and laptop lids
- Sealed wood: finished, smooth signs
Skip it on fabric or anything that flexes, where it cracks, and on raw wood, silicone or textured finishes, where it can't bond. Full wraps fit straight-sided cups; tapered tumblers and curved mugs take a front decal or a front-and-back pair.
How each one goes on
DTF: with a heat press. Our textile transfers use the same temperature and press time; peel timing depends on the transfer type. See our pressing guide for the full instructions. After pressing, wait 24 hours before the first wash. No heat press? Ask us for a pressing quote.
UV DTF: no heat needed. Clean the surface, stick the decal down, rub it firmly, then peel the top film off slowly. The curing is already done in our shop.

How do you apply UV DTF, step by step?
No heat and no press. Six steps:
- Clean the surface. Wash it and dry it. On glass, ceramic or uncoated stainless steel, also wipe it with alcohol. On acrylic, plastic or coated pieces, check the maker's care instructions first: alcohol can leave fine cracks in some acrylics. Let it dry completely, because any dust or oil weakens the bond.
- Cut the decal from the sheet with scissors.
- Peel off the backing.
- Line it up before it touches the surface. The bond is permanent.
- Rub firmly from the center out with a card or squeegee to push out the air.
- Peel the top film back slowly at an angle. If an edge lifts, lay it back down and rub again.
Full wraps fit straight-sided pieces. On tapered tumblers and curved mugs, use a front decal or a front-and-back pair. All six steps are on our UV DTF Transfers page.

UV DTF vs DTF: quick answers
Is UV DTF better than DTF?
Neither is better overall: they're made for different materials. DTF is for fabric. You heat press it, and it stays flexible on the garment. UV DTF is for smooth, hard surfaces like glass, stainless steel and ceramic, and you apply it by hand with no heat. Pick the one that matches what you're decorating.
Is UV DTF like a sticker?
In how you use it, yes: it applies like a premium sticker. It goes on cold, by hand. Peel the backing, stick it to a clean, hard surface, rub it firmly from the center out and peel off the top film. No heat and no press. The difference is the finish: full color with a raised 3D texture under a clear varnish coat. And the bond is permanent, so line it up before it touches the surface.
Is UV DTF better than vinyl?
For full-color designs on drinkware, UV DTF has the edge. Vinyl decals are cut, weeded and moved with transfer tape, in solid colors layered by hand. UV DTF is peel and stick, with photos and gradients in one decal. It's also waterproof and scratch-resistant, while vinyl edges can peel with washing. Either way, wash decorated drinkware by hand, and never put UV DTF in the dishwasher or the microwave.
Can you use UV DTF on shirts?
No. Our UV DTF film doesn't stretch once it cures, so it cracks on fabric or anything that flexes. For shirts, hoodies, hats, or a fabric koozie, order regular DTF transfers and heat press them.
What can you put UV DTF on?
UV DTF works on smooth, hard, non-porous surfaces: glass, stainless steel, ceramic, acrylic, metal and sealed wood. That covers mugs, glass cans, tumblers, metal signs and acrylic pieces. It won't stick to raw wood, silicone or textured finishes.
How long does UV DTF last?
A few guides put it at about 2 to 3 years on a mug or cup that's washed by hand, and up to 3 to 5 years on indoor pieces. Treat those as estimates, not a guarantee: we don't list a specific lifespan or wash count for ours. It depends on the surface, how firmly the decal was applied, how much rubbing it takes and how you care for it. The varnish coat is waterproof and built for Miami humidity and sun. Hand wash drinkware and never put it in the dishwasher.
Are UV DTF transfers waterproof?
Yes. The clear varnish coat is waterproof and built for Miami humidity and sun, as long as the decal was applied to a clean, dry surface. Waterproof isn't dishwasher safe, though: never put UV DTF in the dishwasher, and wash it by hand.
Why is my UV DTF decal peeling off?
Usually it's one of these: the surface had dust or oil on it (wash, dry and wipe it with alcohol first); the surface isn't compatible (textured, raw wood, silicone or anything that flexes); the decal wasn't rubbed firmly from the center out; or the cup was washed within the first 24 to 48 hours or went in the dishwasher. If an edge lifts while you peel the top film, lay it back down and rub again. The six application steps are on our UV DTF Transfers page.
What are the downsides of UV DTF?
It only works on smooth, hard surfaces, never on fabric or anything that bends. The finish is raised, so it feels like a decal, not like paint. Placement is permanent: line it up before you press it down. And it can never go in the dishwasher or the microwave.
How do you remove a UV DTF decal?
UV DTF is meant to stay put, so placement is permanent. If you do need to take one off, many guides suggest softening the adhesive with gentle heat, such as a hair dryer on low, then lifting an edge with a plastic scraper and peeling slowly at a low angle. On glass or ceramic, a soak in hot, soapy water can loosen it. Clean leftover adhesive with rubbing alcohol, and don't use acetone on plastic, acrylic or painted tumblers. Try it on a small area first.
Are UV DTF transfers dishwasher safe?
No. Never put UV DTF in the dishwasher, even if the blank cup is dishwasher safe. The varnish coat is waterproof, but a dishwasher gets too hot for UV DTF: the heat makes the decal peel off, and detergent and water pressure add to it. Wash drinkware by hand with mild soap and a soft sponge. Keep it out of the microwave too, because microwaving can also make the decal peel off. Our UV DTF Transfers page also recommends hand washing for drinkware. More on washing it: are UV DTF transfers dishwasher safe?
Do UV DTF transfers print the same day?
Yes. Order UV DTF with print-ready artwork before 2 PM ET, Monday–Friday, and it prints that day. Orders placed at or after 2 PM ET, or on weekends, print the next business day. Pickup is available after 7 PM ET on the day your order is ready. Wait for our order-ready email, then pick up from our 24/7 pickup box in Kendall or Doral. Shipped orders placed before the 2 PM ET cutoff leave with UPS the same day.
